The entertainment of baseball defines the heart and soul of professional level sports in our nation. The traditions that’s incorporated within the baseball season is an American pastime and a sport that’s widely respected throughout the world of sports. In terms of the Boston Red Sox, the dedication of the fans to this team is astounding. The Boston area comes together every baseball season to support the team no matter the outcomes of the games. In general, I firmly believe that Boston fans are the most dedicated to their hometown teams and go through the motions of the game as they personally take on the emotions of the losses and wins the multiple teams experience. This season for theBoston Red Sox was aiming to win 100 games at the start of their season in August as well as the goal to win their third World Series title after a gap of not withholding that title in seven years. Unfortunately, that’s not how the season went down.
It’s said to believe that the three star pitchers: Josh Beckett, John Lester, and John Lackey didn’t step up their A game which resulted in the turmoil of the entire atmosphere of the teams’ spirits. Instead of performing their best and doing what they usually do best, they turned “soft” lead the team in the wrong direction. Although there’s many different explanations of why these three starting pitchers didn’t perform to their best ability, bottom line is that the leadership aspect was lacking and the dedication of the team was minimal.
Along with the target of these three pitchers, it was also believed that the personal problems of Red Sox manager Terry Francona got in the way of his decision making as well as his judgements for the game which could have helped lead the team in the destructive ending of the season. His marriage was put on the spot as it was broadcasted that he spent the season living in a hotel after moving out of his house that he shared with his wife. He firmly rejected these attacks as he believed that he did all that he could for the team and he worked harder than ever before to make this season worthwhile.
What’s most significant of this devastating season is the fact that the Boston nation dealt with the loss personally as they dedicated their support and time into these players. As mentioned earlier, the Boston fans for these professional sport teams, especially baseball, give these players their all and really get into the games as if they were played by their own family members. As Dustin Pedroia stated, “I just know that playing in Boston, you’re required to play your tail off every day to try to win ballgames for this city. That’s what hurt so much as a player, that we not only let each other down in the clubhouse but we let the city down.”
